Mini Reviews

I bring you the first edition of "Arda watches things long after they are released and decides to talk about them after many people stopped being interested in them."

Broadchurch
Broadchurch is an 8-episode British drama about a close-knit community that suffers the tragedy of the murder of an 11-year-old boy and how it affects the family, friends, media, police, and community as a whole. It stars David Tennant as DI Alec Hardy (so it might be a bit obvious why I watched this in the first place) and Olivia Coleman as DS Ellie Miller, both of whom are fantastic. The show is really intriguing and sad, and really gets into how devastated the boy's parents are. Every episode kept me captivated with the emotion and the mystery - eventually, I wasn't sure if I wanted them to solve it or not. It's rated TV-14 and has some heavy issues, so if you're interested but want to know about the content, let me know. Definitely recommend.

Mean Girls
The 10th anniversary of Mean Girls was April 30 so I watched it to learn the context of the many lines I heard. It was pretty good, and I enjoyed the coming of age theme. I guess I didn't find it as funny as most people, but I tend to take things seriously and get second-hand embarrassment, so although I like comedies, very few actually make me laugh. But nice to get the references now at least.

The Clone Wars season 6
Watching new TCW episodes reminded me how much I loved this show and I'm sad that there will be no new episodes to look forward to after this. In many of these Palpatine has been looking really sinister and I kind of wish I could forget the movies for a while and be able to speculate about what the heck is going on. While these haven't been my favorite episodes of the series (there are a few in seasons 1, 2, and 3 that are pretty hard to top for me), and they've been kind of sad, I've enjoyed them. The Clovis arc had some interesting interactions between Anakin and Padme, and one scene with Anakin and Obi-Wan that I really liked. I just have the final three episodes left, and I cannot wait to see any bit of Qui-Gon that might be in them.

Frozen
After months of people telling me I have to watch it, I got a chance to see Frozen and really liked it! I had already heard a couple of the songs (Love is an Open Door and Let it Go, which are probably my favorites) and loved the others. Frozen Heart was a surprise but it was so cool. Besides the songs, I really like how they portrayed Elsa, and Anna and Kristoph were great too. Now I must learn all the songs!

From these things that I have watched and the parts that I liked, I can conclude that I like sad things.

In the category of possibly sad things, the Once Upon a Time season finale is tonight. I am not prepared for this.

What have you all been watching lately?

Scarves, Problem Solving, and Photobombs

Haven't known what to write about for a while, so here are a few cool things I've come across lately.

Anyone play Super Mario 64? That will always be one of my favorite games, so it was really cool to find this Princess Peach stained glass window that apocaknits made! Makes me want to jump into it and go down a giant slide, if you know what I mean.

Set to Stunning is an awesome blog about geek chic fashion, and their diy Fridays posts are my favorite. This week they posted instructions to make a Star Wars infinity scarf, but you could use any fabric - licensed, patterned, or plain, - and just follow the simple (from first glance at least!) instructions. I love the look of scarves and found a make-shift infinity scarf really comfortable, so this would be fun to make sometime. If you're looking for a wider variety of fandom fabrics than you would find locally, I've heard Spoonflower is really great - though the fabrics are expensive, they have some really cool designs (I'd love a few yards of that Sherlock wallpaper!).

Random, but this gif really makes me laugh.

Self-explanatory and completely accurate.

If you saw Benedict Cumberbatch's photobomb at the Oscars, you probably thought how great a bookmark he would make. Whether you had such an inspiration or not, you can print and cut out the ones that mizjimmy created. Stick them in books or have them photobomb your own pictures.

This wasn't much of a post, but it was still something! That is all - have a good week!

N-Z Randomness

Continuing my post from before, here are more bits for each letter. A bit Doctor Who heavy, sorry about that. Whoops here come all the hard letters...

N. Nice hobbit - Gollum's blog, Riddles in the Dark is still going strong, though I may have to change the posting schedule soon. Thank you to those who followed and commented, and if you haven't please take a look!

O. Oldish music - I got the Kit Kittredge movie soundtrack from the library the other day and that style of music just makes me so happy. Same with The Music Man - I'll listen to Lida Rose or Sincere and be filled with feelings of I-can't-that-harmonizing-is-just-beautiful. Some really sweet love songs too.

P. Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney is going to be brought to North America and Europe and I am super psyched! I expected it to come but we waited a looong time for an announcement, so that was a really exciting surprise and it's nice to know for sure now. They had a cool presentation for it too and it's just all around exciting.

Oh and also, Pizza.

I'm sorry. But not sorry enough to not post it.
Q. Queen Victoria - I've enjoyed rewatching part of Doctor Who season 2 (including Tooth and Claw with Queen Victoria and School Reunion, which is one of my new favorites) with my brother and a couple friends, who were all seeing these episodes for the first time.

R. Radagast - my brother will tell you, whenever we play the Lord of the Rings alphabet game, I will use Radagast for R. Just one of those things I'm stuck on. But on the subject of rewatching things, we watched The Hobbit the other day, which was a lot of fun. Radagast is awesome, and it's cool to know he's the seventh Doctor. And my appreciation for Martin Freeman's acting keeps growing.

S. School - is starting very soon. Got my textbooks recently and trying to get a few more fun things done before it starts. Hopefully it won't completely take over my life this semester, but we'll see. I'm doing liberal arts math, world religion, music theory, and child development - should be fairly interesting!

T. Trip - a couple weeks ago we went to visit family and had a nice trip. On the plane trip home the clouds were really cool and I got a little obsessive with picture taking.

Wish you could walk on something like this.

U. Umbrella - I continually amused by Mycroft Holmes' umbrella from BBC Sherlock. Sounds like the same prop might have been used in Doctor Who too.

 V. Violet - is a pretty color and name. Oh yes, she was in the Boxcar Children. Did anyone else read those books? I loved them when I was younger.

W. We Go Together - there are two songs a Much Ado About Nothing soundtrack that David Tennant and Catherine Tate did (We Go Together and Sigh No More) and they're a couple of my favorite songs right now. Those two are fantastic together.

X. X-TER-MIN-ATE!

Y. Ya'll - have to stop posting so I can catch up! Kidding of course, but it would help. ;) I've been trying to catch up on a bunch of blogs but if I've missed your blog as while going through them, if you've been posting a lot and I haven't commented in forever, let me know or something, because some blogs don't show up on my dashboard.

Z. "Ze awesome powers of this wall we've clearly demonstrated, ah! But out here in the hot hot sun, perhaps you're dehydrated?"

The 11 Tag - part 2

A while ago I did a post on the 11 tag (click here for part one!), and promised answers to the others who tagged me. Well, the questions added up quickly (44!), so I picked five questions from each person that tagged me for this post. If there was a question I skipped that you'd like an answer to, let me know and I'll gladly add it!

Voronda's questions:

1. What you dream to be when you get older?
Well, putting aside all worries about majors and careers, I guess one dream I have is to be a better writer and artist, even if they're not things I would pursue as a career.

2. What was yesterday like?
Let's see, yesterday was Saturday (hopefully I'll get this posted before midnight so it will still be yesterday). I practiced some music, went out with my mom and brother (got a Qui-Gon action figure at Target!), came home and did practiced some more music and dancing to relax (for a musical - I don't really know how to dance otherwise!), and eventually went out again with dad for secret mission part one. Dad kept some flowers for Mom at a friend's house as a surprise for Mother's Day and he and I went to plant them in window boxes. I drove around a bit so we'd have a cover story (I got my permit a week or so ago), then came home. We went to church for a while to pray, came home again and eventually Mom went to bed. Dad took my brother and I back to the friend's house to pick up the window boxes for secret mission part two. When we came home we were about to put them in Mom's window, but her light was on! We met her, but she went back to bed soon and after waiting a while, we got the flowers in the window. And she was surprised this morning, which was great. So to make a long story short (too late) yesterday was a little tiring but good.

3. Dream House?
An older house, something kind of small and cozy with a front porch and window seats. And maybe yellow walls in the kitchen with lace curtains.

4. A place where you wished you lived it could be any where?
It used to be the Shire, but I'm not sure now. Maybe Minas Tirith or Naboo. Nope, no real places for me!

5. Would you rather give up music or reading/Writing for a year?
Ask me a couple months ago and it would easily be reading/writing, but now it's harder... Music is a big stress reliever for me (and can be lots of fun) and I've gone long periods of time without reading and writing, so I guess I'd give up reading/writing. Thankfully, though, I don't think I'll ever have to make this choice for real!

Alyianna's (from her main blog):

1. What songs are the most played on your iPod...or whatever you use to play music?
Mostly video game related songs and musicals (and video game musicals!).

2. What was the last movie you watched?
The Phantom Menace in 3D! It was a lot of fun. Oh, that was in March...I don't watch movies too much. I'd really like to re-watch Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva soon, as well as see Captain America and a few others.

3. What was the last blog you were on (besides your own and this one)?
What do you know, Alyianna's other blog - Password to Middle Earth!

4. What was the last thing you laughed at?
Not sure, but it might have been a video my brother showed me and our parents - an interview with Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. He kept imitating Mario throughout the video and he seems like a cool guy.

5. Do you like writing stories? If so, what is the story you last worked on/you're working on right now?
I do! My last project was Script Frenzy, a challenge to write 100 pages of a script during the month of April. My script followed a minor character from Ace Attorney, and it was a lot of fun! I've been wanting to write more, but I don't have too many ideas right now.

Alyianna's (from her review blog):

1. Who are your three favourite music artists?
John Williams, The Tolkien Ensemble, and Disney, if they count (they're all listed under "artist" on iTunes, but I've always thought of that term only applying to an individual or band). This does not count a few awesome people on the internet that I've been listening to a lot lately.

2. How many blogs do you follow in total?
70 (oh my, I didn't know it was so many! I may have to clean it out soon), but one is a webcomic, not all of them update, and I don't read all the posts on my dashboard.

3. What type of videos do you watch the most on YouTube?
Mostly video game related ones. Videos where a different audio track is put to pictures or video from a game are a lot of fun. I've been watching some homemade movies lately too.

4. (I'm going to steal Bree's question as well. XD) What is true love to you?
Answer 1: Wanting the absolute best for another person, helping them to be their best, and willing to give yourself to achieve those things. Answer 2: Accepting and loving someone for who they are. Answer 3: From the gospel we read in church today, "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends."

5. Who is your favourite actor/actress?
Ashley Eckstein and James Arnold Taylor! They seem like really nice people from their facebook pages and what I've heard about them.

And finally Nessima's:

1) You have a choice of being given any super-power; what is it?
Maybe telekinesis - it seems like a rather harmless power and it would be like using the Force! Flying would be cool as well, or maybe healing, but I don't think I actually want a super power.

2) What's your favorite musical instrument? What image comes to mind when you think of this instrument?
I love the piano and violin. I don't have a particular image for a piano, but the violin makes me think of Rohan.

3) Would you rather be divinely beautiful, angelically good, or dazzingly clever?
I might say dazzlingly clever. I don't want to be seen as "perfect," and as long as I look all right, I don't have a strong desire to be divinely beautiful. Maybe if I was dazzlingly clever, I could solve the super hard puzzles from the Professor Layton games (there's a few I haven't solved without help yet)!

4) If you could've been born in any time period (other than your own), what would it be?
The first thing that comes to mind is the 1940s. That's one of my favorite fashion eras, and I've always enjoyed reading about that time.

5) You hear about a new historical or fantasy movie that is coming out soon. You are:
a) Ecstatic: you're favorite dream-boat of an actor is in it!
b) Super-stoked: the book that it's based on is amazing!
c) Excited to see the costumes, of course!
d) Your favorite composer is doing the soundtrack. Need I say more?
e) Going just to see the horses which will undoubtedly be gorgeous.
f) Not going at all; there's a new sci-fi thriller out that begs to watched!
Mostly B, or I'll see a cool movie trailer and then read the book first. C and D would be smaller factors but still there, and F only applies if said sci-fi thriller has something to do with Star Wars.

There you go! Now you know a bit more about me. Thanks for tagging me, girls!

Sorry for once again abandoning this blog! Most of the things that have made me busy for the last few months are done now, so maybe I'll post a bit more often. If anyone is interested, I added a note to the first of Gollum's April Fool's Day posts so you can see what the blog looked like that day. Check it out here.

Have a great day everyone, and may the Lord be with you!

LotR Awards (and a guest post!)

Rebecca at Just me... gave me these awesome LotR awards!  Thanks so much Rebecca!

And now the questions that come with them!

1) Who is your favorite LOTR character and why?
Sam.  He's so loyal to Frodo, and I love that although he's in this huge world, fighting battles and facing dangers that most men would not see in their lifetimes, he stays who he is and doesn't lose his simple Hobbit self.

2) If you were in Middle Earth, what species would you be?
Probably a human, but otherwise a Hobbit!  I love their unique traits and charming lifestyle.   Plus I'm short.

3) If you were in Middle Earth where would you be from? Would you be from the Lothlorian Forest? Or maybe the great hall of Rohan? Where would your home be?
Again, with the Hobbits in the Shire!  It's so pretty and not too dangerous.  But I'd want to visit Rivendell sometime!

I give these awards to The Director at Castles, Quills, and Cameras, and any other LotR fans!

Also, on Friday I wrote a guest post on Sophia's blog, Life and Times of a Geek.  Go check it out!

Hope you all have a great week, and may the Lord be with you!

Happy Hobbit Day!

I'm know I'm posting this late, but it's Bilbo and Frodo's birthday!

Doesn't "Hobbit Day" just sound like a delightful holiday?

I've done little things for it in the past, but it would be so fun to have a real party some year.  We could have lots of food, music, and of course - do the Hobbit chicken dance.

Oh!  And not only is it Bilbo and Frodo's birthday...

It's Ashley Eckstein's birthday!

(from Wikipedia.org)

Can this day get any awesomer?  Ashley has been such an inspiration to many of us.  I could write a whole post on how great she is and how she has affected my life.

Speaking of which, I would like to thank all of you for the way you've affected my life.  I really appreciate you all taking the time to read and comment on my blog.  I have loved getting all of your comments, and the ones on my TCW review were very touching.  You are all really great people and I love you.

And in reply to said comments, I am planning on writing arranging for more reviews of The Clone Wars from our friends in the GFFA (galaxy far far away)!  Who will depend on who has the most to say on each episode.  I would love to write for ask Ahsoka, and will try to do her soon.  For all of you watching "Prisoners" tomorrow night, I hope you have fun!

But for now, have a blast!

Fall Releases

Ba de ya, say do you remember
Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, never was a cloudy day

September - Earth Wind & Fire

I like September.  Even if it's not any cooler than August, and even though school is starting.  It's a promise that autumn is coming.  And it has a pretty name.

It also marks the beginning of new seasons of TV shows, holds many other releases.  My brother and I recently put together a list of all the releases and premieres we're looking forward to the rest of the year.  Here's what we have:

September 16

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 4
It's almost here!  The trailers and photos released promise an epic season.  Dave Filoni said Season 4 will be darker than the previous seasons, and the subtitle "Battle Lines" hints at more battles this time around.  As events move toward Revenge of the Sith, it seems Anakin is going to becoming closer to his dark side self this season.  But with Gungans in the second episode, hopefully we'll have some fun too.

September 19

The Sing-Off Season 3
The Sing-Off is a musical competition between a cappella groups.  It's really amazing the music they can make with just their voices.  The contestants are always very talented and great people as well, and there isn't any backstage drama, which I really like.  Also, the judges give kind and informative critiques on the performances.  I always watch this with my mom and brother, and it's a fun thing to do together.  Definitely looking forward to the next season.

October 4

Perry Mason Season Six, Volume 1 DVD
CBS begins to release the sixth season of Perry Mason for fans of the expert defense attorney.  Perry Mason is a courtroom drama based on the series of books by Erle Stanley Gardner.  Along with secretary Della and detective Paul, Perry cracks open murder cases the prosecutor, Hamilton Burger, thinks are perfect.  Perry will not only prove his client's innocence, but unmask the true murderer as well.  The shows are always very complex and exciting.  Volume 2 will be released November 22.

October 4

The Heroes of Olympus: The Son of Neptune

The second book in the series following Percy Jackson and the Olympians!  I can't say much about the plot as it would spoil the previous book (The Lost Hero), but it's going to be incorporating some new characters and put an old character in an intriguing new setting.

October 17

Professor Layton and the Last Specter

The fourth game in the Professor Layton series for Nintendo DS is being localized!  This one is a prequel, and will show how the main characters, Layton and Luke, first met!  I've heard a lot about Emmy, the Professor's assistant in the prequels, and am looking forward to getting to know her.  This game has more puzzles than any of the other games, so that should be fun.  My brother and I are going to pre-order it and figure out how to play it at the same time.  I am so incredibly excited!

October 18

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides DVD

The new movie sails to the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray!  Although the first three are my favorites, this movie was still a lot of fun.  It will be great to watch it again and have a better understanding of what's going on, and opportunities to memorize more good quotes!  Plus my mom will get to see it so my dad, brother and I can stop trying to avoid spoilers!  There are a few different versions coming out - the regular DVD edition will come out November 15.

November 4

(poster from Japanese version)

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva DVD

Another Professor Layton localization - this time the movie!  Following Last Specter, the movie has been out for a while in Japan and Europe, and is finally coming to North America!  Although I've been spoiled on one cool part from looking at fan art, I'm as excited for this as Last Specter!

November 23

The Muppets

They're baaaack!  And in a new movie!  Although I've always preferred Sesame Street to The Muppets, but I've been enjoying a few clips lately (particularly the Swedish Chef), and the hilarious trailer promises an entertaining movie.  If only Yoda were in it...

December 6

The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers: A King's Ransom
A King's Random is the second books in the series following The 39 Clues books.  Each book is written by a different author (some write more than one), and this one is by Jude Watson, my favorite Star Wars author!  I'm definitely looking forward to it.  The books are set in the modern world, but they incorporate history and give it a different meaning, which is very cool.

A few other things coming out soon are:
September 16, Star Wars Blu-ray
October 11, Kung Fu Panda 2 DVD
October 18, The Clone Wars Season 3 DVD
November 1, Cars 2 DVD

So those are a few releases I'm excited about this fall!  What are you looking forward to?

[update 4/29/14 - I closed comments on this because I've been getting spam on this post in particular. Likely no one will read back this far anyway, but there's the explanation if anyone wants it :) -Arda]

Welcome!

Welcome and well met!  After thinking about it for a long time, I have finally started a blog!  Thanks for reading, and may the Lord be with you!
